Ama in Ghana
Ama, a native from Ghana’s capital, Accra, hasn’t seen much of her country and receives an invitation from her favorite auntie to explore Ghana.
As they travel through Ghana, Ama learns about her country, its history, and its rich culture – her culture. Ama in Ghana teaches children of all backgrounds to be proud of one’s roots, embrace curiosity, and simply explore with an open heart.
Bursting with energy, Ayo Sanusi’s vivid illustrations and Eunice Kyereme’s playful text gloriously capture the joy of exploring and the diversity of culture that surrounds us all.

I was inspired to write "Ama in Ghana" during the summer of 2019. I dreamed about a little girl who explored her country with an open heart and led others on the journey too. Greatly inspired by my own experiences in Ghana, this book is a call to be proud of one's heritage and to share our individual stories. First, within our communities and then with the world. I emphasize community first because our stories - whether good or bad, must first be celebrated and acknowledged by the people connected to the story.

When the storyline began to develop, I wrote for the African child. Oftentimes, when you hear people speak about Africa and the people that live there, it’s often with a negative connotation. I wanted to create a story that inspired African children to see the beauty that belong to them. And as I continued to write, I realized that this story could great perspective to non-African children. We live in a tightly knit globalized society, as such it’s important that children be opened minded about people from different cultures. As they begin to explore these cultures, they’ll find that they are more alike than expected.

I love this question! I believe that if you train a child in a certain path, as they grow old they will not depart from it. Ama in Ghana was written from children because at that age, they begin to develop their understanding of the world and their place in it. I believe that I could begin to make more impact at this age, so I began with a children’s book.
